Father’s Family: Leah’s Story
Upon a recent visit to the village of Kabale, Uganda, we met an inspiring woman named Leah who was caring for her chronically ill daughter. Because of her daughter’s health and the costs associated with her sickness, Leah could not send her to school.
But then something changed when Leah joined our church partner’s family-strengthening program called Father’s Family:
“With the Father’s Family, now I see a big change in my life . . . It has really brought great joy to my family.”
— Leah
The Father’s Family
Leah and her daughter are one of hundreds of families who’ve experienced life change through GO Africa’s newest family-strengthening and orphan prevention program called Father’s Family.
As a ministry of the local church, Father’s Family equips families with basic financial management skills, job skills and spiritual healing. Through its ability to strengthen families, Father’s Family has helped reunify children with their parents and extended family members. And for others, like Leah and another mother named Constance, their experience made a dramatic change in the trajectory of their life together:
“Leah found a community, access to training so that she could learn how to farm, access to financial literacy curriculum so that she could learn how to manage her money. Over time, she started a small business: She was able to grow food in her garden, sell it in her garden and make a little money. And not only that, but the food that she was growing was more nutritious! It wasn’t long before her daughter started performing better, started getting healthier and was able to return to school. And Leah had raised enough money from the sale of her goods to pay for her daughter to go to school.”
— Jake Barreth, Director of International Ministry
Because of the program’s effectiveness, Father’s Family continues to expand quickly in Uganda, currently serving more than 480 families and more than 1,200 children! With your help, our local church partners in Haiti and India plan to begin implement their own culturally-relevant versions of this family-strengthening program later this year.
