The Global Orphan Project Partners with Heartland Soccer Association
The locally based nonprofit will be lead sponsor of two fall tournaments and distribute donated soccer equipment, clothes to kids overseas.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Sept. 3, 2009) The Global Orphan Project, a locally based nonprofit that tackles the orphan pandemic by building self-sustaining villages for kids worldwide, will be the lead sponsor of the Heartland Soccer Associations Midwest All Girls tournament and Midwest Classic tournament, one of the region s largest. Together, the tournaments will draw more than 25,000 fans to the new Overland Park Soccer Complex at 135th Street and Switzer in Overland Park, Kan.
Outside of the United States, soccer is by far the most popular sport, said Mike Fox, co-founder of The Global Orphan Project. Put a soccer ball down in one of our villages and you have instant community with those kids. Partnering with the Heartland Soccer Association makes perfect sense to us.
The Heartland Soccer Association represents approximately 600 teams, (11,000 youth players), 2,000 coaches and 300 referees per season. The Midwest Classic, Sept. 5-7, will be the inaugural tournament at the new soccer complex, which officially opened Sept. 1. The girls tournament, Oct. 17-18, will celebrate its 15th consecutive year.
The Heartland Soccer Association is proud to align itself with The Global Orphan Project, said Shane Hackett, Heartland executive director. Our goals are the same: to help kids grow up healthy and strong while instilling in them lifelong skills like teamwork, good sportsmanship and self-discipline.
Tournament sponsorship is just the next step in a long-standing partnership between the two organizations. As part of its Kick Start program, Heartland has donated more than 2,000 pounds of used soccer equipment and clothing to orphans abroad. The Global Orphan Project s parent foundation, C3 Ministries, will be distributing future donations to young soccer fans in Haiti and Africa.
