Ready to love without boundaries
By GO Fellow Sarah Herrera
We read that God loves orphans and we sing about how Jesus loves the little children of the world, and so we take it upon ourselves to echo His ways and try and mirror His heart. These are wonderful things to do and necessary ways to love, but it is often easy for us to forget how God will work in our own hearts along the way.
It is not uncommon for visitors to announce at the end of their trip, “I thought I came to love on them, but instead I feel like they loved on me.”
I smile when I hear such things because I know what they are talking about… I see it happen to them.
One of my favorites, in particular, is the relationship between two children. A visiting 11 year-old, who has a huge heart for ones even littler than her, was immediately magnetized to a little boy at Source de la Grace. Though he was not much smaller than she, he was loved on and loved back as much – if not more – than any other I’ve witnessed yet. They were attached. Whether making funny faces and silly noises or tickling tummies and laughing hysterically, this relationship was a bond of friends who wanted to care for each other.
Such a bond is exactly the way Jesus would have it. We cannot love on others without His example of love first and foremost, and these two small children were so very evident of that. They belong to Jesus, they are ready to love without boundaries, and they did so. They are the best example, and we so easily forget why Jesus tells us the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to the little ones.
